Primitive reflex therapy for Huddersfield families
You may have been told to wait and see, or to wait for a referral. Meanwhile, your child is still coming out of school worn out, and you are still the one picking up the pieces at home.
I'm Rebecca Gough, an INPP Licentiate and Tomatis Level 2 Practitioner. I see children from Huddersfield and across Kirklees at my clinic in Honley, just 3 miles from the town.
When something doesn't add up
Parents usually come to me because they have noticed a mismatch. A bright child whose handwriting comes nowhere near what they can tell you out loud. A ten-year-old who holds it together all day, then falls apart in the hallway at home. A child who gets car sick, trips over nothing, or covers their ears in the school hall.
Often, the piece nobody has checked is a set of early reflexes. Every baby is born with primitive reflexes, and they are meant to fade during the first year of life. When they stay active, the body can keep reacting in ways it should have grown out of, and everyday tasks like sitting still, copying from the board or coping with a noisy room take far more effort.
A proper assessment shows whether this is part of the picture for your child. Read more about primitive reflexes.
A teacher first, including here in Kirklees
I spent over twenty years in the classroom before I trained in this work, and some of those years were in Kirklees schools. I know how a busy classroom feels to a child who is struggling, and how hard teachers and SENCOs work within the limits they have.
That shapes how I work with families. I will explain what I find in plain English, and help you think about what it means for school as well as home. More about my background.
INPP and Tomatis, under one roof
I am the only practitioner in West Yorkshire offering both approaches, so if your child would benefit from each, you won't need to find a second practice.
The INPP Method
A detailed assessment of your child's reflexes, balance, coordination and eye movements, followed by a personalised programme of gentle movements. These take just a few minutes a day at home.
The Tomatis Method
Specially filtered music, built around your child's own Listening Test results. It can help children who are hypersensitive to noise, or who hear well but hold on to little of what they hear.
Waiting for an assessment or diagnosis?
You don't need a diagnosis to get started. Plenty of the children I see have one, some are on a waiting list, and others may never need one. This work sits alongside your GP or paediatrician and does not replace them. It isn't a cure, and it won't change who your child is.
If you are on the NHS Right to Choose pathway, you may find this helpful: support while you wait for Right to Choose.
Wrap-round support with your child's school
Where it would help your child, I work in partnership with their school as well as with you at home, so that everyone around your child is working from the same understanding of what they need.
Assessment in clinic or at school
The assessment takes up to two hours and is ideally carried out in clinic. If that isn't possible, I can do it at school by agreement with the school. A parent or carer needs to be there, unless I am directly employed by the school on the schools pathway.
Daily movements that fit your family
Your child's programme can be delivered by you at home, or by school staff during the school day.
Working with your SENCO
SENCOs are welcome to talk things through with me informally, and schools need no paperwork to refer a family. Funding can come from families or from school inclusion funding.
Alongside existing plans
This work sits alongside any EHCP, SEND support plan or NHS pathway your child already has. It does not replace them.
This individual support is my own clinical work, and it is separate from the INPP Schools Programme. That is a whole-class programme from INPP UK, delivered by trained school staff, and I advise schools considering it and support staff already running it. More about support for schools.

Questions Huddersfield parents ask
Do you see children from Huddersfield?
Yes. My clinic is in Honley, 3 miles from Huddersfield, and I see families from Huddersfield and across Kirklees.
Does my child need a diagnosis?
No. I work with children whether or not they have a diagnosis, and you can start with the free online questionnaire yourself.
How long does the INPP programme take?
It usually lasts around 18 months, depending on your child's progress. The movements take just a few minutes a day at home, with reviews every 6 to 8 weeks.
Can this run alongside speech and language therapy or occupational therapy?
Yes. The INPP method is designed to work alongside speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and learning support, rather than replace them.
Can you work with my child's school?
Yes. I work in partnership with schools. The assessment is ideally carried out in clinic, but can take place at school by agreement, and the daily programme can be delivered by school staff or by you at home.
Not sure where to start?
The free questionnaire is the easiest first step. If you would rather talk it through, book a discovery call, email rebecca@thinkthrive.co.uk or ring 07939 456941.
